Contactless Payment Launch Date

Contactless Payments were successfully trialed in 2006/7 and officially launched in September 2007 in London.  All UK Acquirers are involved in the roll-out and are issuing Contactless enabled credit and debit cards to their customer base. 

Initially, the launch sites are postcodes EC2, EC3, EC4, E1, E14, SE1 and SE16 so any retailer in these areas can gain competitive advantage and be the first in their industry to be Contactless enabled. 

Over 5 million Contactless enabled cards are expected to be in circulation in 2008 as Contactless Payments become widely available and perceived as the standard way to pay.
