By the end of March 2010, it is estimated that 1 in 15 UK cardholders had contactless functionality on at least one debit or credit card; this is expected to rise to 1 in 5 cardholders before the end of 2012.

Based on actual trends from the previous 6 months, we can expect over 12 million cards to be issued with contactless functionality by the middle of 2010; rising to approximately 15 million by the end of the year. By the time we reach the 2012 Olympics the number of cards issued with contactless functionality is expected to have reached 30 million.
Towards the end of 2010 additional card companies are expected to join rollout, meaning the number of cards predicted could rise even further (although not yet possible to quantify).

For cardholders in the UK the Contactless transaction limit is set to increase from £10 to £15 from 20 February 2010. The industry has agreed to increase the Contactless transaction limit in response to demand from retailers and cardholders.
